The hills above Calistoga hold many grand properties, and this contemporary farmhouse estate is no exception. We were thrilled when the owners employed our design build services to transform an old pool area into a sustainability focused terraced perennial garden with an entertainment Cabana.
Our design work blended contemporary and impressionistic flare with defined clean lines sweeping across the space accented with natural stone. California natives, flowering perennials and grasses gracefully arc from the planting beds, softening the contemporary elements and gesturing towards the wildlands extending beyond the landscape into the surrounding hills while introducing low-water use, low-maintenance, sustainable landscape principles into the design.
The main upper patio consists of contemporary bluestone accented by a grand white painted pergola with wisteria vines. Subtle black metal fencing allows lines of sight to be pulled down towards the pool while providing security. Cascading perennials begin as a border planting and spill into tumbling color and varying architectural interest with upright grasses highlighting visual focal points. Formal boxwood borders frame the flagstone pool patio luring one to the Cabana featuring bold timber construction and open slanted roofline.
Terracing is formed by mortar set Sonoma fieldstone walls and bluestone step treads referencing the main patio materials and delineating between passage way and patio. These stonewall terraces are stunning visually as well as lending great fire defense from a wild fire that might approach from the valleys below. Using locally sourced Sonoma Fieldstone lends sustainability to the walls as opposed to pouring concrete or importing stone from other regions.
Custom FX Luminaire landscape lighting controlled by wifi-enabled FX Luxor transformer allows for full color, dimming, zoning, and advanced custom programming of lighting schedules. Fixture selection was focused on soft subtlety with elegant yet understated fixtures in a brushed bronze finish that blends into the surrounding stonework.
