This was a phase 2 project at a wonderful downtown Petaluma cottage style home with lovely owners who are totally in love with one of our trademark creative realms in maximalist perennial gardens that feature unabashed displays of densely spaced flowering perennials. Their back landscape is showcased in our portfolio as ‘Petaluma Pollinator Hideaway’ and the request from the owners was to “Do your magic in the front as well”. Our response? “Say no more, our pleasure!”

A mature Japanese Maple remained from the original landscape and we seized the opportunity to tuck a shady seating area amidst the flowers to sit amongst the butterflies and hummingbirds that adore this garden just as much as our clients. The planting palette features many key ecologically functional CA natives including Epilobium canum, Eriogonum fascicularis as well as butterfly magnets such as Agastche, and Salvia. All these plants and more harmonize to create an ecological paradise for pollinators of all sorts taking sustainability to the next level.

There’s no doubt we pushed every inch to its limit in this planting plan and the result is a showstopping burst of vibrant color that has become the talk of the neighborhood.
