Blank slate landscapes are some of our favorite projects, and this downtown Healdsburg contemporary bungalow fits the bill. Our clients hired us for design build services and with two small dogs and a desire to entertain outside and a love of flowers, we set off to create two custom metal pergolas for climbing vines and entire front/back landscape redesign.
The clients requested lawn space for their dogs and potential for future renters with kids, so we featured a wide rectangular space perfectly suited for dog runs or kids playing games. The lawn is a resilient fescue blend specifically designed to use a little water as possible in Healdsburg climates. The sprinkler system was laid out for maximum distribution uniformity and utilizes water-conserving stream-rotor sprinkler nozzles adding a sustainable touch to the lawn as they require about 70% of the water used by traditional sprinklers.
For entertainment spaces we custom designed and fabricated steel pergolas to allow Star Jasmine vines to climb which created cooler shaded zones around the BBQ, seating area, and front door of the house which is east facing and gets very hot in the afternoon.
We pounce whenever there’s an opportunity to add sustainability and save our clients money by reusing on-site materials and in their spirit we repurposed a stack of bluestone pavers we found deep in a materials pile behind the house. With varying dimensions, we created a contemporary stepping stone pathway leading around the back of the house which provided visual interest as well as delineating the lawn from the colorful foundation planters and pots.
